This piece is important to me because during turbulent times like these I think it’s particularly important to find peace in the being, especially for myself as a black woman. Fighting for equality and maintaining mental integrity is difficult to balance at times. Having hurtful conversations and combatting relentless systemic racism is necessary for the emergence of a better post-COVID-19 world but I believe it is important for it not to come at the gross cost of wellbeing and inner balance.
The fight is not over and mounting pressure is inevitable. Amid impact, this piece reminds me to soften in order to absorb and dissipate rather than harden over only to crack like a sheet of glass. This way I can continue to advocate for the dismantling and defunding of oppressive corporations and institutions. Black lives matter and black mental health does too.
