Lemon Yellow

If you sit still
And say little,
Polite, like a lemon,
You might be happy.

Maybe make your mind
Think only of fruit;
The yellow of a lemon’s rind,
The sound of a watermelon
Cracking open on the ground,
How it feels
To peel an orange.
You might be happy.

You should
Squeeze lemon on your hair
Let it bake and bleach in the sun.
Watch your arms and legs change colour,
a chameleon to heat.
You might be happy.

You could sit still,
With your lemon-yellow hair,
And your lemon-yellow smell,
And your lemon-yellow mind,
And be happy.
